How you can help a Rape Victim

Helping a friend with Domestic Violence  or  Sexual Assault

You can help a rape victim by ….
  • Providing a safe place.
  • Listening to – and believing – the victim without questioning and/or blaming.
  • Encouraging the victim to seek medical attention.
  • Helping the victim to explore the options available, and then respecting the victim’s decisions.
  • Reassuring the victim that the sexual assault was NOT the victim’s fault.
  • Assuring the victim that the situation was handled correctly: the victim is still alive!

Sexual Assault is a violent crime – no one asks for or “invites” sexual assault.

Healing is possible.
It is important to know that healing from sexual assault is possible. It takes tremendous strength and courage to reach out to others for help at such a difficult and traumatic time.

Many survivors have found help in healing through counseling and support groups. A DASI Rape Care Advocate can provide information and resources that a sexual assault survivor may find helpful. The services of the Rape Care Advocate are free and confidential.
